Make A 21 for 2021 List

Every new year I’m simultaneously excited for new opportunity, hope, and memories, yet plagued by the enormity of creating a resolution. In 2018 I opted out of resolutions for good and stuck with a list of things I want to accomplish that year. Let me break it down…

Each year the list is as long as the ending of the year (ie; 21 items for 2021).

I always create one “don’t break the chain” item. This is something that you do consecutively everyday of the year. In 2020 it was “walk 20 minutes a day”, in 2021 it’s read for 21 minutes a day.

I create a balance between things I want to do (taking a weekend surfing trip), and things that I should do, but never will if they’re not on the list (organizing folders on my laptop).

There’s always 1 item that can be crossed off easily within the first 10 days of the year (try an americano was an easy one, but rewarding nonetheless).

I reflect closely on my values and how I want to show up in the world when determining what makes my list. For example, “get coffee with 100 people in 2021” reflects my value of quality time with others, and meeting new people with different perspectives (and of course, drinking coffee).

Here’s my 21 for 2021, I hope this inspires you in the new year!

  1. Read 21 minutes a day
  2. Run 1800 miles
  3. Go to Bryce Canyon & Zion National Park
  4. See a dermatologist
  5. Try a cortado and a flat white
  6. Run a marathon
  7. Create a monthly newsletter for quotes, books, things that I’m enthusiastic about
  8. Take a weekend surfing trip
  9. Celebrate the first day of every new season
  10. Learn how to make vegan croissants
  11. Improve my iron levels and get it tested
  12. Make a vlog
  13. Invest in the perfect blender
  14. Get coffee (or virtual) with 100 different people
  15. Achieve a monetary goal
  16. Send something meaningful for people’s birthdays
  17. Make the perfect cup of coffee
  18. Take a new class
  19. Go to San Francisco
  20. Go to a rowing class
  21. Make a big change

Coffee, brand-building, and meeting new people gets me up in the morning. Productivity, running, and traveling helps me sleep at night.
